Classes

Classes
I am available to teach a wide variety of book arts related classes and have taught for the Graduate Liberal Studies Program at Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT and the After School Arts Program (ASAP), Washington, CT. Listed below are descriptions of some of the classes that I have taught recently. The class list changes year to year and can be customized for any specific event or student population. Most classes can be taught in homes, camps or school facilities. A variety of interesting papers and unique book structures make these classes popular with many age groups from six year olds to octagenarians!

Bookbinding for Artist's Books

This course focuses on providing beginning students with an introduction to the traditional craft of bookbinding
and how it can be used as a jumping off point for making artist’s books. Examples of a wide variety of artist’s
books will be shown as well as information on collections, online sources, and journals that specialize in the book
arts. Both traditional and contemporary book structures will be taught including pamphlets, accordion books,
Japanese stab bindings, tunnel books and small albums. This class will emphasize methods that require little or no
special equipment and will concentrate on non-adhesive binding methods.

Miniature Books

Miniature books have a long history and are today experiencing a revival. These books, all of which are three inches or smaller, make a wonderful handmade gift, stocking stuffer or card. They are the perfect format for a favorite quotation, short poem, wish or greeting. Using a variety of interesting papers, we will explore several types of bindings including pocket accordions, flowerfold books, stick bound books, tunnel books and pop ups.

Eco Books

A book class with a fun green twist! All the projects use recycled and upcycled materials. We will learn how to take everyday materials from around the house, flea markets, thrift stores, and hardware stores and turn them into clever and eye-catching hand-made books that can then be used for school projects, journals or imaginative greeting cards.

Altered Books

This workshop will focus on using recycled and found materials to make artist’s books that can incorporate photos, trip journals, short stories, poetry and lyrics. We will also learn basic calligraphy, collage and photo transfer techniques to add text to the books. Simple bookbinding techniques will be used to create fantastic one-of-a-kind books that use existing book structures.

Suminagashi/Japanese Paper Marbling

Suminagashi/Japanese Paper Marbling
Suminagashi, literally spilled ink, is the Japanese art of floating ink on water and manipulating it into marbleized patterns, then transferring the color to absorbent paper. Endless variations of color, design, and style are possible and each marbled design is unrepeatable and beautiful. We will learn how to apply the technique to create exquisite cards, stationary, wrapping paper and other items.
